Elizabeth Ann Stewart known to all as Betti, Mom, Mama and Nana, age 84, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024. She was born on September 8, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY to Elizabeth (Bessie) and John Hollan.
Betti was a beloved wife, mother, Nana, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Robert Stewart, Sr., children, Robert (Kelley)Stewart, Jr., Mary (Dennis)Calabro, John (Kimberly)Stewart, Christina (Joseph) Costello, and her 10 beautiful grandchildren, Christina Calabro, Prudence Stewart, Molly Stewart, Emma Stewart, Robert (Morgan) Stewart, III, Joseph Costello, Matthew Calabro, John Costello, Elizabeth Calabro, and Mary Costello.
Our beloved Mother was known for her unshakable faith, kindness, hospitality, WIT, could imitate ANY accent for laughs and was a BRILLIANT Jeopardy player and every trivia game who had the warmest and most contagious smile. Mom was a prayer warrior and would go to daily Mass until, due to her health decline, couldn’t.
Not a lot of people know this, but Mom belonged to a theatre group when she was in her 20’s among other roles one of her favorites was one of the Pigeon Sisters, Gwendoline, in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple (our Dad played Oscar). Dinner Theatre aside, Mom’s priority was raising her 4 children and then loving and caring for her 10 grandchildren who she adored both equally and completely.
Mom was the perfect example of a woman of faith. Not only did she pray tirelessly (many, MANY rosaries) but Mom brought SO MANY people to the faith and BACK to the faith. The ripple effect is still rippling even though she is physically no longer with us. In the 80’s Mom was one of everyone’s favorite teachers at Saint Joseph’s CCD program. But Mom was never limited to a classroom. Infact, she taught the faith to anyone who was lucky enough to listen. Whether it was in her kitchen where she was always warming up or creating leftover masterpieces (Mom was the QUEEN of leftovers) or really ANYWHERE Mom would get people to want to pray! Her vast knowledge of the Saints helped anyone in need of help on a test (Saint Agustine) a lost item (Saint Anthony) and the list goes on because Mom always knew which Saint you needed to ask the intercession of.
Bottom line, Mom LOVED being a Mom and was SO GOOD at it. There are endless stories and anecdotes because she was everyone’s favorite person. If you didn’t ever get to know her you can by knowing any one of her children and grandchildren because she poured herself out and into all of them. We are so very proud that she was our Mom and we will miss her but know she will be praying for us all until we see her in Heaven.
